Chimps’ safari – Uganda

The chimpanzee trekking in the Kibale National Park gave us one of the most exciting moments of our trip in Uganda. Unlike gorillas, this one is much less demanding. The trekking, made entirely on flat surface, took place in a dense forest where a local guide showed us the various types of local plants and the species of birds that inhabit the area. The sighting of chimpanzees is not guaranteed but occurs, they say, in 95% of cases. It was very interesting to learn their habits, how they behave and what they eat: let’s keep in mind that we share 98% of their DNA with them. While the guide was telling his story, he suddenly stopped and started to make some call sounds.

In a few seconds, in the silence of the dense and thick forest, we heard their screams. At the memory, I still shudder… we heard the noise of something that was only a few meters away from us.

We turned our sight to a tree and in a few seconds, we saw a chimpanzee climbing up one of its branches. It was a very powerful experience. His companions approached and began to observe us and, after few minutes, it was as if we were not there, they ignored us and moved on.

Besides chimps, we also had the opportunity to see other primate species, including white and black colobus, red-tailed monkeys and velvet monkeys.
