Kimberley: Broome and surroundings – Australia

From Sydney, with a 4-hour flight, you can reach Broome, in the Kimberley region, and set off to explore this beautiful remote area by starting with a visit to the Dampier Peninsula.

Broome is a very quiet town where the only attractions are Chinatown and the pearl shops that made the city famous.

Cable beach and Gantheaume Point are worth the visit. The first is an amazing beach, less than 15 minutes by bus from Broome. Taking a long walk along this wide white beach, while waiting for the sunset, is a wonderful and relaxing experience. But you will not be alone, lots of off-road vehicles will arrive directly at the beach to enjoy the sunset and a beer. Everybody is well prepared: chairs and tables, picnic food, music and guitars… In short, one of the most memorable sunset ever.

Gantheaume Point is also a fun place, at just 6 km away from Broome. The beach is less spectacular, but here you will be able to see some dinosaur footprints that date back to 130 million years ago, still preserved in the rock. The footprints, placed on the cliff, are visible only at low tide. In any case, a plaster duplicate has been placed on the top of the cliff.

If you are a nature enthusiast, do not miss the “Staircase to the moon” phenomenon: it is an optical illusion created by the reflection of the full moon which, while rising in the sky, is reflected on the surface exposed by the retreating tide in Roabuck Bay. Broome celebrates this phenomenon, which occurs three times a month between March and October, with live music.
