Renting a car in Namibia

Our journey to Namibia is one of most fun and adventurous journeys we remember, thanks to the possibility of being completely autonomous for the entire duration of the holiday. We had, in fact, rented a 4×4 jeep that allowed us to drive along the less traveled routes and to be, most of the times, the only guests of the campsite.

The tend-solution, placed on the roof of the vehicle, gave us freedom in all our movements. The campsites are often well equipped and we never needed to book them in advance.

Our route gave priority to the areas in the northwest of Namibia: Kaokoveld and Damaraland, which require a good 4×4 off-road (ours was a Nissan Patrol) and good maps. There are not many roads, so it is almost impossible to lose your orientation. We recommend, however, to have a GPS phone with you, in case of emergency.

We had rented the car through a local agency in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, where we also had bought very detailed maps.

Here is a list of the essential requests for car rental:

  • Insurance with full coverage (including tires and glasses). Make sure all roads are included
  • Double spare wheel
  • Double tank
  • Roof tent
  • Complete camping equipment (chairs/table/flatware/torch)
  • Satellite phone
  • Heavy sleeping bags due to the rather low temperature when traveling during the summer

A valuable advice is to get fuel whenever you have the opportunity, sometimes it may be difficult to find stations within a range of hundreds of kilometers.
