The ideal time

If you want to visit the south of Ethiopia, the right time to do it is during our summer. On the contrary, in the northern part, it is the rainy season period, for which we should go in winter.

During the day it is very hot; however, we suggest you to bring a jacket because, should it rain – or even during the evening – the temperature drops. In Addis Ababa the air is very fresh, the city is in fact at over 2000 meters above sea level.

How to move around?

On a 4×4 Jeep, possibly with a driver. Sometimes there are no roads, in the sense that you will find slopes with crossings of small rivers and very dense livestock.

Pictures

Unlike all our previous trips, we learned that if you want to take pictures of people in Ethiopia, you will have to agree on a price in advance. This is obviously a matter of a few birrs (the local currency), but the oddest thing is that the subjects will pose while looking straight at the camera. We were a little bit embarrassed because it was the first time we were facing such a situation and, usually, we like to “steal” moments of everyday life in a very discreet way.

Vaccinations

As always, when visiting these countries, we recommend consulting the office in charge to understand which vaccinations are required to have a safe and relaxed trip. We got the prophylaxis one for malaria, hepatitis A and B, Tetanus and typhus fever.

Visa

The visa for Ethiopia can be requested directly on your arrival at the airport and it costs $35.
