A practical guide – Uzbekistan

The best season

The best season to go to Uzbekistan is Spring (between April and June) and Autumn (September-October). We traveled in August and it was pretty hot. We used to start our visits early in the morning, going back to the hotel mid-afternoon to rest and going out again in the evening.

If you want to do some mountain trekking, then summer is the best period. During the other seasons, weather can be unpredictable and you may find snow.

What to wear

Shorts and t-shirt are essential to cope with the heat, never too humid though. In the summer, wear sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself during the warmest hours.

Transportation

We took a couple of flights, then we used ground transportation (taxi, train, bus). Every car in Uzbekistan can be a taxi, it happened to us few times, people just stop you in the street and ask if you need a ride.

Where to sleep

Our bible is always the Lonely Planet. But you need to be smart on how to use it, close to the one suggested by the guide there are always few more, less known, same quality and usually better price! If you don’t want to book in advance, don’t worry you’ll find something.

Visa

To enter Uzbekistan you need a Visa, duration can vary from  to 30 days. Visa are not issued upon arrival and you need to request that at the Embassy. It can take few weeks to get it, so plan in advance.

Other

Language: we did not have any issue with language, people here speak multiple languages, a man in Tashkent proudly told me he was speaking 4: Uzbek, Russian, Kyrgyz, Tajik, but none was actually useful for us… anyway many young speak English, we also found several who spoke Italian, they stopped us along the streets to have simple conversation and practice!
