Petra: the city carved into mountains – Jordan

A UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been declared as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Petra, the pink city carved into the rock, is one of the most magical places on Earth.

The main entrance is the eastern one; a long canyon – named Siq – is dug between the rocks. The effect is amazing. Behind the last fissure between the rocks opens the wonderful view on one of the most beautiful monuments of Petra, the Khasneh al Faroun, or Treasure of the Pharaoh, whose facade is carved into the rock.

The archaeological complex was brought to light by a Swiss explorer only two centuries ago.

In the archaeological site there are more than 800 classified monuments of which 500 are graves. The central street is a colonnade from the Roman era. Other important monuments are the amphitheater and the Monastery, a building accessible through a long staircase of 800 steps (on foot or horseback); it’s like the Treasury, but much larger. It is obvious that Petra is a popular destination, so we recommend avoiding the busiest streets and taking a walk in the less traveled ones. You will enjoy Petra in a completely different way.

You can experience a different view of Petra by attending “Petra by Night”, an event happening every week. The site is opened in the evening (from 8.30 PM to 10.30 PM) and hundreds of candles are placed in front of the Treasury. The voice and the music of a Bedouin will be in the background while telling the story of site. It is one of the most evocative shows to be ever witnessed.
