Australia: a practical guide

The best season

Definitely during our summer, since it is the dry season in the North. During our winter, instead, would be impossible to travel here due to heavy rains.

What to wear

A t-shirt is fine by day, but at night, immediately after sunset, you have to put something else on. So, bring a fleece and a windbreaker. The coldest places are Purnululu and Uluru.

Transportation

On a 4×4. Roads are mostly unpaved with small fords to cross and some highway sections. Also, you should be very careful if you happen to drive in the evening, as it is very common for wallabies and kangaroos to cross the road. It is necessary to plan your drives in order to arrive before the sunset and avoid unpleasant accidents.

An international driving license is absolutely mandatory. We got it issued by the road traffic office in Italy. Here you can find more information about the type of car we rented.

Where to stay

Apart from Sydney, Broome Darwin and Alice Springs (therefore, the main cities we visited), we have always slept in a campsite. Most provide bathrooms, showers and electricity. Some were probably more “natural” like the one in Purnululu.

Miscellaneous

Be careful if you want to bring food with you such as honey, fruit and more. They are not allowed when passing from one state to another. Also watch the mud under your shoes; yes, they check that too…
